I'm not normally a guy who seeks out alcohol - simply because I'm a lightweight - but in the IT business you tend to have those kind of days where you want to rip out the hearts of your co-workers, clients, and other unsavory people (such as hipsters, who should be kicked in the teeth by plutonium-toed boots until their teeth are a radioactive pile of dust which is then used to make ironic nuclear weapons) and on those days you feel you've earned a drink.  The menu looks awesome, we were able to make a reservation for a Friday night - and it was a good idea, because it was well-packed by the time we got there and stayed busy the whole night through.  Formerly Indigo Smoke, which I never got the chance to go to, this is a wonderful, accessible restaurant that elevates barbecue and other good old American classics to a fresher, newer level. Okay, so Coda is in the heart of Maplewood.  But something happened on the way to heaven, baby. Review Source:Ĭoda, baby, why you gotta be like that?  Why we gotta be like this?  Girl, I wanna give you 4 stars, even 5. Now I'm not going to completely hold their service against them and let that ruin it for good so we'll be back again to give it another try and see if anything else on the menu can really do it for us. I ordered a blackened grouper sandwich or more or less a sandwich with a side of fries, salad and maybe a dab of fish on the bread.

My wife had a salad with chicken and the chicken was moist and tasty. We had a mushroom toast appetizer which was pretty good. Seems like the chef is just trying new things out and trying to figure out what works. The menu is a bit confusing as many of their dishes start with one style and end with something you wouldn't expect.

Any staff that came in the room gravitated to their table and therefore we were left sitting by ourselves most of the night without any chance of ordering another drink and it took forever to put in our order. We were seated in a small room with a large party, just us and them and that made for some uncomfortable eating. It seems like its trying to be upscale dining but all the waiters were dressed in jeans and tshirts giving you that diner feel. The restaurant itself is in a great location (definite plus) but the inside is setup a bit odd.  I will certainly be making my way back here soon. I always think that's a nice touch to a restaurant. The manager on duty that night came over and chatted with us. My friends salad was really tasty as well and they dressed it very nicely ( not too heavy or light ) The sauteed bok choy underneath was an excellent veggie side and the creative way they used the vegetable sushi to add just enough of a starch to soak up your sauce and fill you was indeed a great addition. What they did with the shreds of fried ginger and spices took this dish up a few notches.

Outer skin crusted and crisped, meat cooked through all the way, flakey and the texture was outstanding. I ordered the Ginger Seared Bass, when it came out, I was impressed by the visual and scent it was giving off. I ALWAYS appreciate and know when bread has been freshly made or is microwaved to seem hot. Hot bread came to the table and though I don't usually go for the bread basket, I devoured this one. What I loved about him was that he hesitated and even seemed a little shy to ask us for ID one we made our drink selection ( kind of like, they look young buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut maybe kinda old too.)  It also could be that he knows my friend is the older sister of one of his friends, but I'd like to flatter myself for the time being. Our waiter was young and quick to acknowledge us. Coda, happned to be where a friend and I came along one night and, on her advice, we stepped in. The town is filled with new fresh places to have drinks, desserts, eat or hang out.

It has changes drastically since my high school days and while at first my nostalgia kept me from embracing it, I must say, it really has changed for the better. From the delicious bread down to my last sip of wine ( the malbec which I highly suggest ) I think it will also be good to see the atmosphere on different days and see if the service stands up to the experience I had this time around.Īll that aside, and simply put, I had an absolutely terrific meal at Coda. However, I do plan on returning here again, to try other menu items as well as wine list items.

I've been here only one time, which is why I could not give it the full 5 stars.
